Automation Technician Program

Online Technical Training

As one of North America’s largest accredited distance education providers, George Brown College offers a self-paced, online Automation Technician Certificate course to prepare for a rewarding career in industrial manufacturing technology. This training is developed for those who cannot attend the traditional college environment on a full or part-time basis.

Our online Automation Technician is a well-rounded course that covers the latest technologies used in modern industrial automation, including Allen-Bradley PLCs, Robotics and Electromechanical Systems. Using state-of-the-art simulation software, students learn to design, test, and troubleshoot complex electrical systems, ladder logic programs and robot-control programs.

Areas of study include:

  • Electricity & Electronics – Build a strong foundation in electrical principles, electronic circuits, and digital logic.
  • Advanced PLC Systems – Learn to operate, debug, and program PLCs with advanced functions like timers, counters, and sequencers for industrial control circuits.
  • SCADA & Distributed Control – Gain an understanding of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), and Programmable Automation Controllers (PACs).
  • Robotics & Control Systems – Study robotic vision, tactile systems, manipulators, links, and joints, and get hands-on experience with robotic programming languages.
  • Electromechanical & Motor Control – Learn about DC/AC motors, transformers, control circuits, and industrial transducers used in manufacturing and process control.
  • Hands-On Learning with Simulation Software – Experience real-world applications with LogixSim – a powerful suite of four simulation tools that includes CircuitLogix, RoboLogix, PLCLogix 5000, and 3DLab. The simulation software bridges the gap between theoretical and practical usage, providing an interactive, virtual hands-on experience.
